Editorial use only Harvey Washington Wiley (1844-1930, standing at front), US food chemist, and colleagues on the steps of the US Department of Agriculture's Division of Chemistry. In 1882 Wiley accepted the position of Chief Chemist at the Department of Agriculture. He worked on developing food laws, culminating in the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act. The laws were aimed at preventing the adulteration of genuine foods by cheaper, less nutritious and sometimes hazardous substitutes. From 1912, Wiley ran the laboratories of 'Good Housekeeping' magazine, where he continued his work as a consumer champion. Photographed in Washington , USA.
