Preserved in Renaissance stained glass: male members of the 16th century French family donors of a Passion of Christ window in the Église Saint-Rémi at Ceffonds, a Haute-Marne village in Champagne region, depicted kneeling in prayer with Saint Peter the Apostle.

Ceffonds, Haute-Marne, Grand Est, France: male members of the 16th century family that donated a colourful Renaissance stained glass window telling the biblical story of the Passion of Christ and made by the master glassmakers of Troyes, historic capital of the Champagne region. The panel shows the husband and his three sons kneeling in prayer, with a patron saint, St Peter the Apostle, standing behind them. A similar panel to the left depicts the praying wife and her four daughters, accompanied by St Helen. The window was made in 1511 and was one of several installed in the village church, the Église Saint-Rémi de Ceffonds, as it was rebuilt between 1510 and 1524. Champenoise School stained glass made in the Champagne region - particularly in the workshops at Troyes - was renowned at that time for its intense blues, striking reds, vivid emerald greens and vibrant chrome yellows. Troyenne glass survives in many churches in the river valleys of the Aube, Marne, Upper Marne and Yonne. Apart from vivid colours, it can be identified by the inclusion of small narrative scenes and, as in this depiction of St Helen, halos with beaded decoration.
