The Io Moth, latin name Automeris io, is an attractively colored moth belonging to the Saturniidae family. It is widespread all over north Io's caterpillars are very sociable organisms in all stages of their development, often seen filing in procession over fruits and plants. The larvae are of orange colour that will change to bright green when the caterpillar is full grown. The caterpillar is covered with many radiating little spines that sting very painfully when touched, a property that is called urticating. The resulting painful skin reaction on man is a condition known as erucism.
