Nurse log with many small evergreen with lower branches eaten by deer, Lyell Island, Haida Gwaii, BC

Lyell Island, site of the former village of Hlk'yah Llnagaay, was the site of a logging protest that led to the protection of the area and the creation of Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site. A trail at Hlk’yah G̱awG̱a runs along Windy Bay Creek and winds through old-growth western hemlock, red cedar and Sitka spruce. This is the last intact watershed on Lyell Island. A beautiful nurse log contains a row of many small evergreens. If you look closely, notice that the lower trunk of every young tree was bare, and only the tops, which were out of reach of the invasive Sitka deer, had growth. It gave them a strange umbrella-like look. Lyell Island, Haida Gwaii, BC
