Mr. Rowan was appointed town sergeant under TownMajor Macdonald, both being retired veterans of the samefamous Highland regiment. William Rintoul, , was born at Kincar-diue, Perthshire, Scotland, on the 30th of October, 1^9* studied at the Universities of Edinburgh and Glas-gow, and took the degree of , at the former. He wasordained by the Presbytery of Dunblane, in 1821, asminister of the Presbyterian Church at Maryport, Cum-berland, England. But he was deeply imbued with themissionary spirit all through life, and his thoughtstravelled beyond the seas. His sympathies followed hisco-religionists who were then in large numbers seekinghomes in the distant colonies, and he wrote a pamphleton the claims of the colon
