Temple of Nabu (scribe-god of wisdom) on the acropolis at Nimrud, Iraq: inside the rectangular sanctuary built of mud bricks looking W to the dias. The temple complex known as Ezida was founded by Queen Sammu-ramat (Semiramis); the temple archive housed legal documents, treaties & religious & magical texts. Ancient Kalhu (Calah in the Bible) became the capital of Assyrian King Ashurnasirpal II around 883BC. The site was buried as the modern ground level demonstrates. Nimrud is a World Heritage Site; in spring 2015 the remains were largely destroyed by supporters of Daesh (IS/Isis). This photograph was taken in March 1983.
