Shipwreck, Cape Agulhas, Agulhas National Park, South Africa. polluted oceans. Oil spills are becoming more common. More than 90% of world trade is carried out by sea through some 90,000 ships. Like other forms of transportation that use fossil fuels, ships emit carbon dioxide, which contributes significantly to climate change and ocean acidification. In addition to carbon dioxide, ships also emit a number of pollutants that further aggravate the problem. Another undoubted danger to the ocean is HFO spills. Transporting this dense fuel can be a huge environmental disaster if a spill occurs, as has recently happened off the coast of the Mauritius Islands or like the one that happened off the Galician coast with the Prestige in 2002, further increasing the consequences of climate change.
