He first opened an office on thewest side of Main street, south of State street, and rapidly built up an. excellent 1886, owing to the death of a relative, he returned to Germany, where he spent severalmonths. While there he received the degrees of Doctor of Medicine and Surgery and Masterof Obstetrics from the University of Jena, in recognition of a thesis on obstetrics. He alsotook a course in general surgery in Vienna, his native city, under Professor Dr. DR. Dr. Clemens served as medical examiner for the dis-trict of Easton under Coroner Holt and was twice president of the German Medical Associa-tion of Connecticut. During tlie earlier years of his practice in Bridgeport he performed agreat deal of surgical work. His entire time and attention have been devoted to his pro-fessional interests and reading and study have kept him in touch with the trend of modernprogress in medicine and surgery.
