Human embryo. Illustration of a human embryo aged six weeks (42 days) seen in the uterus. Measuring 13-15 millimetres in length, the embryo does not yet appear human. It has paddle-like limbs with fingers and toes forming; a tail; eyes with some pigmentation; external auricles (ear buds). The embryo floats within its amniotic sac, attached to the placenta (at left) by an umbilical cord. A yolk sac (yellow) supplies nutrients to the embryo. The embryonic period from 3-8 weeks is marked by tissue and organ development. At 6 weeks old the liver, heart and gut have formed, and bone is hardening in the jaw and collar bones.
