The only Orthodox Christian monastery in Finland, New Valamo Monastery (Valamon luostari), is situated in Heinävesi. The Orthodox Church of Finland also became a state church in 1918 like the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Today, percent of the Finnish population belongs to The Orthodox Church of Finland .
