II<; J VALVE (. mechanical detail that all preceding ap-pliances for the same purpose should belooked upon as ineffective. The Ste-phenson valve gear did excellent serviceas long as the locomotives were what arenow called small in size, and tlie eccen-trics and their attachments could beconveniently reached. In the larger typesof locomotives the Walschaerts and othervalve gears arc more scrviceatilc ticcauscof being more easily applied and much part allows the power consumed in mov-ing heavier parts to be applied to thepurpose of moving the train. This, however, is only one of thelesser advantages claimed for the Youngvalve gear. In the completed equipmentconsisting of valve, a valve gear, and ascrew reverse gear there are distinct ad-vantageous features that challenge atten-tion, and from which it may be statedbriefly that engines equipped with thisvalve gear are unusually reliable in start-ing, and it has been found that it israrely necessary to slack even theheaviest trai
