In his boyhood the Megarians had seized andoccupied Salamis, and the Athenians were so imbecile anddemoralized by discord and faction, that they failed to recoverit until Solon, now a man, wrote a poem on the loss of hisnative Salamis. Having thus excited the martial spirit of thepeople, he was given command of an expedition and led a forcewhich gained a decisive victory over the IMegarians.
