The whole perform-ance had become exceedingly ridiculous, and Ford seemed anxiousto get out of his scrape, by accomplishing at least something by theexpedition, which was highly expensive to the State. He thereforesent Col. Baker to Alexandria authorizing him to negotiate with :^^Pi. \
