Amongthe food refuse were bones of the common domestic animals and birds,including the Great Auk, antlers of red deer of great size, and quantitiesof the shells of the common edible shellfish of the adjacent Keiss Road Broch. The Broch at the White Gate is also situated close to the seashore,about halfway between the village and Keiss Castle. Only about 5 feet of the height remains. The entrance faces the sea,and is 2 feet 10 inches in width at the outside, widening inwards andshowing two pairs of door-checks formed of slabs set upright edgewaysin the wall, and projecting from 6 to 8 inches. There is no stair. Twosecondary walls cross the interior from front to back, and the entrancepassage is prolonged exteriorly through a cluster of out-buildings, oneof which showed part of its beehive-roofing. Among the
