Implanted blastocyst in the uterus, computer artwork. The blastocyst (yellow) is a ball of embryonic cells that arises from a fertilised egg. It will develop into the foetus, placenta and amniotic sac. Here, the blastocyst has just implanted into the wall of the uterus (pink), which takes place about 6 days after fertilisation. Once the blastocyst is embedded in the uterine lining, the placenta (the temporary organ that supplies the growing embryo with oxygen and nutrients) will develop.
