Elegant lantern. The exquisite Place des Vosges is the oldest planned square in Paris. Built by King Henri IV, it was inaugurated in 1612. France.

The Place des Vosges is the oldest planned square in Paris. It is located in the old Marais district and straddles the dividing line between the 3rd and 4th arrondissements, with the houses on the north side being on the other side of the boundary from the rest of the square. It was built on the orders of Henri IV between 1605 and 1612 and was originally known as the Place Royale. It is literally a square being 140 metres on each side. What was new about the Place Royale was that the facades of the houses around it were all built in the same unified style, probably by Baptiste du Cerceau. It is the prototype of all the residential squares, of European cities, that came thereafter. In 1799, after the French Revolution, the square was renamed when the département of the Vosges became the first to pay taxes supporting a campaign of the Revolutionary army.
