Although the Universitywas established in 1870, it opened its doors to students on September17, 1873; hence the selection of this year for the celebration. A general anniversary committee was responsible for the over-allplanning. Vice-President Harlan H. Hatcher was chairman of thiscommittee and James F. FuUington, chairman of the Department ofEnglish, was executive director of the celebration. There were a number of other committees responsible for differehistoryofohiosta06ohio
