The 53km circuit, or kora, of Mt Kailash (6714m) is one of the most important pilgrimages in Asia. It is a sacred site in 4 religions: Hinduism, Bon, Buddhism, and Jainism. In Hinduism, it is traditionally recognized as the abode of Shiva, while it is believed to Mount Meru in Buddhist texts. Most pilgrims complete the circuit around the mountain over three days, with Hindus, Jains and Buddhists going in a clockwise direction, but followers of Bön go anticlockwise.
