After duty on board thereceiving-ship Potomac, he became navigator andexecutive-officer of the iron-clad Saugus, of the NorthAtlantic Squadron, and then executive-officer of the iron-clad Ajax. He was next stationed at the navy-yardat Philadelphia from May, 1871, to December, 1872, andthen joined the Supply as executive-officer. Thisvessel was employed on special service in connection withthe Vienna Exposition from January to December, some months after this, Lieutenant Forsyth wasstationed at the Philadelphia Navy-Yard. From March,1874, to February, 1877, he was navigating officer of the Powhatan, North Atlantic Station. Ill health caused. him to take three months sick-leave, but he was orderedto the course in torpedo instruction that summer, and forthe rest of 1877 and the whole of 1878 he was on dutyat League Island. He was promoted lieutenant-com-mander May 9, 1878; served as executive-officer of the Constellation in her special service of Irish relief,March to June, 1880, and then w-as for some monthsupon waiting orders. In 1881, after three months ser-vice in the receiving-ship Colorado, he was orderedto the Lancaster, of the Mediterranean Squadron, asnavigating and executive officer, where he remained untilSeptember, 1884. The Lancaster was flag-ship diningthis period. Lieutenant-Commander Forsyth was on leave fromNovember, 1884, to April, 1885, when he was ordered toLeague Island as ordnance officer, and remained thereuntil June, 1886.
