'Columbus landing in America, 12th October 1492'. By Archibald Bertram Webb (1887-1944). Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) was an Italian explorer, navigator, and coloniser. Although Columbus was not the first European explorer to reach the Americas (Leif Ericson having reached the Americas in the 11th century), Columbus's voyages led to the first lasting European contact with the Americas. Columbus is seen landing on one of the islands of the modern day Bahamas which he would name San Salvador.
