SARS-CoV-2 spike protein in an open conformation, molecular model. The SARS-CoV-2 spike protein is a trimer of identical protein chains, coloured here in blue, green and lavender. Nearly all the blue protein chain and most of the green chain are in view, but only a small section of the lavender chain can be seen. Each subunit has a receptor bonding domain that can be either extended or closed. In this structure, the blue and purple chains are in the open state, and the green chain is closed.
