Unique Experimental Gas Turbine locomotive 18000 on display but showing signs of age and rust at Didcot.

The polished, slightly rusty numbers on British Railways experimental gas turbine engine powered locomotive 18000 with a background of sky, some reflection in the green paintwork with distinctive orange stripe. Didcot Railway Centre is a former Great Western Railway engine-shed and locomotive stabling point located in Didcot, Oxfordshire, England, which today has been converted into a railway museum and preservation engineering site. British Rail 18000 was a prototype mainline gas turbine-electric locomotive built for British Railways in 1949 by Brown, Boveri & Cie. It had, however, been ordered by the Great Western Railway in 1946, but construction was delayed due to World War II. It spent its working life on the Western Region of British Railways, operating express passenger services from Paddington station, London.
