It is growing at the city sales- yard of Howard & Smith, nurserymen, of Los Angeles and Montebello. This tree is Eucalyptus citriodora, the lemon- scented gum, the foliage of which is as fragrant as that of the lemon-scented verbena, Aloysia citriodora. It was planted seventeen years ago, by one of the members of the firm, and is now 130 feet high, so that it has made a growth averaging about eight feet per year; yet, with this great height, the diameter at the base is only eleven and three-quarters inches. The picture shows a steeple-jack climbing the tree to cut off a few straggling limbs. He doubtless chose a calm day for the operation, as the tree is so "whippy" that it sways as much as fifty-six feet from the up-. A Famous Eucalyptus Citriodora. right. The first branches are 120 feet from the ground and an idea of what it looks like can be gathered from the fact that the crepe myrtle growing by the adjoining lath house is about twenty feet high.
