Norman keep dates from circa 1170 probably being constructed by Robert FitzRalph. The curtain wall was built by the Nevilles after 1270 when Robert Neville of Raby married Ralph Fitzranulph's heiress. The castle was the stronghold of Warwick the Kingmaker and a favourite residence of Richard III.
