Gran Dolina Boy reconstruction. Artwork of a reconstruction (right) based on Homo antecessor fossils and stone tools (left). This reconstruction is based on fragmentary skull remains (upper left) dating from 800,000 years ago, found in the Gran Dolina excavation, in the Atapuerca mountains of Spain. The child (dubbed Gran Dolina Boy) was between 10 to 12 years old when he died. It is thought he was a victim of cannibalism. Homo antecessor is an extinct species that forms a relatively recent part of the human evolutionary tree.
