The third carbon teing partially out of the arcstream remains cool, and hence there is great oppositionto the starting of the A C arc, which wholly or partiallyeliminates the alternating current apparent in a smallloop of the curves previously mentioned, giving totalrectification. It is to be noted here that all these wavesare semi-transient phenomena, the wave shape varyingconsiderably in a few cycles. The oscillograms s :own inFigs. 6 and 7 were easily taken for the condition pre-vailing then was a fairly permanent one. In obtaining theoscillograms shown in Figs. 8-12,other methods were necessaryas this condition, as denoted by the snapping sound , wasonly momentary. Everything being in readiness the thirdterminal was placed near the edge of the arc stream. Theoscillogram was taken when the snapping noise was heard, brought about by the shifting of the arc, o
