FRISIA BOREALIS. Nordfriesland 1240 & 1651; pre/post flooding. BLAEU, c1667 map

Artist/engraver/cartographer: Joan/Johannes Blaeu. Provenance: "ATLAS MAIOR O GEOGRAPHIA BLAUIANA", by Joan Blaeu. Type: Original large folio 17th century antique map. Uncoloured. This pair of maps show the massive erosion of the coastline and of inhabited coastal islands of North Frisia or Northern Friesland due to flooding during the middle ages. The map on the right hand side of the sheet shows the coastline in 1240, while the left hand side shows the same coastline in 1651. The map on the right hand side shows a number of low-lying islands which were inhabited in medieval times by the Frisian people. Several floods such as the Grote Mandrenke in 1362 and the Burchardi Flood of 1634 damaged great parts of the North Frisian coastal area, destroying entire islands and having a very damaging effect on the North Frisian language, culture and economy. The Frisian language is closely related to English, and during the Middle Ages trade flourished between North Frisia and East Anglia, England. Other places marked or shown on the map include Tønder (Tondern), Husum, Ribe, Friedrichstadt. This area is today located primarily in Germany between the rivers Eider and Wiedau/Vidå.
