Bluebottle eye. Close-up of one of the compound eyes of a bluebottle (family Calliphoridae) fly, showing the individual lenses (ommatidia, hexagonal). Each ommatidium is a tiny simple eye that sends a signal to the fly's brain. The brain combines the thousands of images to form a mosaic view of the world. The image is not sharp but is excellent at detecting movement. Magnification: x57 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
