To His Honor, the Mayor and Gentlemen of the City Council:The imiidxM- of deaths in New Bedtord for the year 1922was IjGO, and tlie death rate, based on the Census Bureausestimate of the citys population, 127,542, was plus. This is a slightly higher rate than that of 1921, which wasWMS plus, but it is lower than any other recorded death rateui the citys history. An adjusted rate, secured by deducting non-residtnt deaths, is plus. It is interesting to note that seventy-four of the deaths of1922 were due to various external causes. They includeseven suicides, thirteen gas-poisonings, twenty deaths due toautomobiles, seven drownings, thive homicides and eightburnings. Such deaths are not usually thought of as lyingwithin the scope of public health work, yet they count in thedeath rate tlie
