Waning crescent Moon, time-exposure image. North is at bottom. As the Moon orbits the Earth, the amount of sunlight reflected from its visible hemisphere varies in a regular 28-day cycle. This is a waning crescent Moon, with darkness encroaching (from left) as the lunar night falls across the visible hemisphere. This image has been over-exposed to show the detail in the dark area of the Moon, normally not visible due to the brightness of the sunlight area. Photographed in Earth's southern hemisphere.
