E., chief mechanical engineer of the rail-way, and are the most powerful express passenger loco-motives in Great Britain, their tractive effort 40,300 lb. between the frames, the valves for the outside cylindersbeing operated by rocking levers from the inside inside connecting rods have forked big ends fittedwith gib and cotter, but the outside rods have solid bushedends. The boiler carries a working pressure of 250 square inch, and is built with conical barrel and Bel-paire firebox, without a dome. The steam is taken froman open pipe at the highest point over the firebox andthe safety valve is mounted on the barrel. In constructing the inside firebox, copper stayed en-.
