Gladiatorial Poster
This illustration shows a poster found at Pompeii (the Italian town destroyed in the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79). The ad is for a gladiatorial combat and translates "The familia [school or house] of gladiators of Aulus Suettius Cerius aedile [one of top public offices in ancient Rome] will fight at Pompeii the last day of May. There will be a chase [combat with animals] and a velarium [awning] to keep off the sun.
