Joseph Bazalgette (1819-1891). Monument to the British civil engineer Sir Joseph William Bazalgette. Bazalgette is most famous as the builder of London's sewer system. He examined London's sewerage problems after cholera outbreaks and water pollution issues in the 1850s. During 1859-65 he planned and supervised the construction of a sewerage system which used 318 million bricks in 2080 kilometres of tunnels, over an area of 169 square kilometres. The system discharged 1890 million litres of sewage, through 3 pumping stations, away from the city. Bazalgette also built the Thames Embankment and bridges over the River Thames at Putney and Battersea. Photographed on the Victoria Embankment, London, UK.
