Neutrino research. Researcher looking at a display screen being used in neutrino research. Neutrinos are elementary particles with no charge and little or no mass, mostly produced by the stars. They interact with ordinary matter only very weakly, and are therefore extremely hard to detect. Billions pass through Earth every second, with a detection rate of 10 per day. Special detection methods are used, with the detectors heavily shielded from other particles. Photographed at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland.
