London, England. 1911 - A view of the fountains at Trafalgar Square, London. The photograph shows the original fountain centrepieces dating from the 1840s. These were replaced following the Second World War with a new design by Sir Edwin Lutyens. A temporary grandstand, visible on the left, and a balcony attached to the front of Morley’s Hotel, opposite, were both constructed in preparation for the coronation of King George V in June 1911. Between the fountains is the Statue of General Gordon, which was removed and relocated in 1943. St Martin-in-the-Fields church is visible in the distance.
