The operation was not particularlydifficult, and plenty of good muscle was found with whichto close the very large opening. COMPLICATIONS IN SURGICAL CURE. 273 Fig. 154 is a case of very different type and one, if recog-nized, where an operation should not be attempted. In thiscase it was easily ascertained that a large amount of intestinewas present, a small amount of it reducible, and it was believedthat a large mass of hypertrophied omentum was also in thesac. This unfortunately did not prove true. The man had Fig. T. S. Recent left iiigiiinul henna ; rnormoLis right scrotal hernia live years previously. See figs. 150 and 15X. suffered several attacks of partial intestinal obstruction unac-companied by very acute symptoms of strangulation, butincreasing in frequency, and the case had e\ery indica-tion that surgical relief was required. The conditionobserved upon operating was apparently a most unusualone. 18 i~i ABDOMINAL HERNL\. On opening the sac no omentum was found, on the con-trary, it was packed with convolutions of bowel held on amesentery of ver} unusual character (fig. 155). This mesen-tery was a fan-shaped, board-like mass, fully an inch thick. Fig. 153.
