The Wold Grift in Alford. An under water stream that passes under houses. Alford is an interesting place with a population of just over 2,000. There was a settlement here in pre-Norman times and also a place for crossing the beck. In the Domesday Book the name is given as Alforde. When the beck was turned into a water catchment drain it became known as the Wold Grift
