Mining and counter-mining were goingon, and sorties by small bands of desperate men were of frequentoccurrence. Gardner, like Pemberton, was holding out in hopes of somemovement by Johnston or Taylor, but it was a vain hope. On thenight of the seventh, news was received of the surrender of Vicks-burg.
