Mining on the site has been continuous for over 700 years. There are over 300 kms of tunnels in the mine as well as various caverns and chapels reaching a maximum depth of 327 m below ground level. Renowned for the health giving qualities of its micro-climate, it also contains a sanatorium for the treatment of chronic allergic diseases.
