Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), light micrograph. GBM, also called glioblastoma, is the most common (15% of brain tumours) and most malignant cancer starting in the brain. It is the most invasive type of glial tumour, rapidly growing and commonly spreading into nearby brain tissue. The tumour is predominantly made up of abnormal astrocytic cells, but also contains a mix of different cell types (including blood vessels) and areas of dead cells (necrosis). The histologic pattern is characterized by the presence of small areas of necrotizing tissue that are surrounded by anaplastic cells arranged in palisades and the presence of hyperplastic blood vessels. On the right half of the image is conserved nervous parenchyma.
