Galactic centre. Composite infrared image of the centre of our galaxy, the Milky Way, located in the constellation of Sagittarius. Infrared can peer through the dense dust that obscures the Galactic centre when viewed in visible wavelengths. The central core (upper left) is about 25,000 light years from Earth and is thought to contain a supermassive black hole. The field of view in this image is about 10 by 8 degrees. This image was made as part of the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) project started in 1997, which used ground-based telescopes in the USA and Chile to survey the entire sky using near- infrared technology.
