Climate change space mirrors in Earth orbit, artwork. The Moon is at upper left. This is a depiction of a proposed future technology to be used to combat the threat of global warming. An array of mirrors launched into orbit would be used to reduce the amount of sunlight reaching the Earth. The idea was first considered in the 1980s, and continues to be studied in the early 21st century. However, the need for a large area of mirrors, the uncertain feasibility of the technique, and the high cost, means this example of geoengineering would likely be used only if other methods failed.
