At we sighted Cape Riley and BeecheyIsland. We saw a cairn with a staff at the south end, andwe soon made out a house and boats upon the low wind increased from the north, with all appearance of agale. I prepared to anchor, and steered in towards the eleven we anchored in 12 fathoms, mud and clay bottom,Northumberland House bearing (mag.) about aquarter of a mile, and veered to 30 fathoms of cable. Itnow blew a gale from N. to directly out of thebay. I went on shore with two of the officers to inspectthe place, and ascertain the state of the provisions andboats. I found that the house had been stove in at thedoor and in both sides by the wind and bears, and almost. Cape Riley, where the first relies of Franklins Expedition were found.
