Almost in front of us was theunique bridge, the Pont Transhordeur, whichis a structure so lofty that the largest ships sailunder it. From this high structure is suspendedby long cables at the street level a platformwhich is run back and forth across the streamlike a traveling crane, taking teams and peopleacross the river without compelling them toclimb the high ascent which would otherwisebe necessary. 32. ©ur Jfirsft 3Run in jFrance You cannot get away from the history ofJeanne DArc anywhere in Rouen. There is agreat monument to her in the suburbs, anotherin the market square and near it a marble slabin the sidewalk records the place where she wasburned at the stake in 1431. There are souvenirspoons of her and emblems of some sort or otherin every shop, and we even saw ginger cakes ina bakers window so perfect in likeness that youwould recognize her, leading one of our party tocomment, incidentally, on the fact that she hadalways understood that ginger was noticeable inJoans characteristics. Rouen is justly famous for her superb cathe-drals. They are creations of the best expressionsin architecture and no one, no matter how muchhe may dread seeing Europe by the so-calledCathedral Route, can fail to be impressedwith the solemnity and grandeur of St. Ouen,the finest specimen of Gothic architecture inFrance.
