SPLIT PERSONALITY

Split personality, or multiple personality, is a dissociative disorder characterized by the presence of two or more personalities within a given individual. The subject is often over-imaginative or hysterical, shunning reality and creating imaginary personalities. The subject may be persuaded to have two complementary and opposing personalities (Stevenson’s Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde). The original personality is generally unaware of the other personalities, experiencing only gaps of time when the others are in control. Other forms of multiple personality involve mental confusion or the loss of personal identity.
