Engraving print circa 1876 based on John Trumbull's famous painting "Declaration of Independence" (commissioned in 1817).

Engraving print circa 1876 based on John Trumbull's famous painting "Declaration of Independence" (commissioned in 1817). The scene is often incorrectly described as the signing of the Declaration - it actually shows Thomas Jefferson and other members of the drafting "Committee of Five" presenting its draft to Congress on June 28 1776. Jefferson, seen handing over the document, is flanked (viewed left to right) by John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert R Livingston and Benjamin Franklin. Seated at the main table in front of them is John Hancock, President of the Second Continental Congress. Engraving by Waterman Lilly Ormsby (1834 - 1908), based on Trumbull (1756 - 1843).
