Indice Carbone or Carbon Index on the packaging of food from a French supermarket.

From 1 July 2011 labels on French products have started to show an Indice Carbone or Carbon index. The index is intended to show the product's total carbon dioxide emission over its entire life cycle including manufacture, transport, packaging and distribution. This gives some indication of the product's contribution to global climate change. The European Union is producing a similar EcoLabel project to identify products with a reduced environmental impact. This example is on the packaging of a Camembert cheese from a Casino supermarket.
