The Norwegian explorer Herjulfson (also spelled Herjolfsson) is credited as the first European to see the coast of the Americas, which he is said to have sighted in 985 or 986. This illustration, dating to around 1900, shows Herjulfson's ship as the typical Viking ship, with the high bow/bowsprit in the same of an imaginary dragon's head.
