Spinal ligaments. Computer artwork of the lumbar (lower spine) showing the bones and ligaments (white). Ligaments are bands of connective tissue that connect bones. Running down the front of the spine is the anterior longitudinal ligament. Between the transverse process on the side of the spine are the intertransverse ligaments and between the spinous processes at the back of the spine are the interspinous ligaments. The large triangular bone at the base of the spine is the sacrum, with the coccyx (tailbone) below that.
