Released Mylar balloons return to earth, often on lakes and oceans. Pictured is one of eight found washed up within 700 feet of Lake Michigan shoreline near Two Rivers, Wisconsin. The balloons pose a danger to wildlife, as curious animals and birds may ingest some of the plastic or become entangled in the attached ribbons. Mylar does not biodegrade, so they can remain in the environment for years.
